21 percent of the German population aged 6 and above make music in their leisure time - that is around 16.3 million people and around 2 million more than four years ago. The study ‘Amateur Music Making in Germany’ provides a differentiated overview of age groups, gender and social class-specific differences as well as access routes, challenges and the voluntary commitment of musicians.

The data are based on a population-representative survey conducted by the Institut für Demoskopie Allensbach (IfD) on behalf of the miz. The German Music Information Centre published the results in April 2025.
